How do you handle the endless, repetitive questioning without losing your sanity
Welcome to The Fog & Memory Lane! If you’ve ever found yourself mentally drafting an escape plan after hearing the exact same question for the hundredth time today, grab a cup of coffee and come join us. You are officially among friends who understand.
Since this is the very first post in our brand new community, figured I'd break the ice here by sharing our daily Olympic-level mental gymnastics event: surviving the infinite loop question game with my dad.
Lately, my dad’s dementia has reached that fun stage where short-term memory has completely checked out of the building. Last week’s reigning champion question was: "What time are we going out?" We were scheduled for a medical appointment at 11.15am on Friday. He asked this question about 100 times everyday for the whole week. Even on Friday after we had come back from the said appointment...
It's funny how he remembers that he has an appointment but can't remember that he has already gone for it. Anyway, Ive realised my mistake now, no need to tell him about any appointment except maybe like an hour before. A friend also suggested that I make a big calendar or schedule to stick on the wall so my dad can see it clearly. That might solve quite a few of the champion questions like his all time fav, "What day is it?". I will try it soon, hope it works! But what about you guys, what are your go-to survival hacks? Do you use therapeutic white lies? Do you change the subject to snacks (has a 50% success rate with my dad)? Drop your best magic tricks below please... really pleaseeeee ... hang in there everyone
