Is It Just Me?

Is it normal to feel intensely annoyed at my loved one sometimes, or am I just a terrible person? ????

Hey community, I really need a safe space to get this off my chest because the guilt is eating me alive today.

Lately, I’ve caught myself feeling very very irritated and impatient towards Mum. Not because she's doing anything malicious—she's dealing with her own health struggles and cognitive decline, and she literally can't help it. But yesterday, when she asked me the exact same question for the fourth time in twenty minutes while I was trying to juggle a work call and prep lunch, something inside me just snapped.

I didn't yell, and I kept my voice calm on the outside, but inside I was screaming. I felt this hot flash of pure annoyance, and I just thought "Is it really that difficult to just leave me alone for five minutes?" But the second those thoughts pass, the guilt crashes down ten times harder. She looks at me with those trusting, confused eyes, and I instantly hate myself for feeling frustrated. I love her with all my heart—I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't—but the constant repetition, the loss of my own personal space, and the sheer monotony of the routine just really wear me down to the bone.

Is it normal to feel this kind of deep-seated annoyance and resentment towards the person you are caring for? How do you stop the cycle of frustration followed immediately by crushing guilt? I havent lost my cool towards her yet but if this keeps going i'm worried that i might shout at her. Does anyone else go through this? Would love to hear how you guys handle these moments without losing your cool. All the best everyone!

Caregiving brings up a whirlwind of heavy and often unspoken emotions. Here, you are free to be completely honest without fear of judgment. This is a safe harbour to talk about caregiver burnout, complex family dynamics, and the heavy mix of guilt and love. Know that whatever you are feeling, you are never alone in it.
