Senior Citizen Discounts and Benefits in Singapore: Groceries, Transport

Choosing to care for a family member is an incredibly meaningful journey, but it is also a demanding role that can reshape your daily life and long-term plans. Balancing finances, managing logistics, and preserving your own emotional energy make the day-to-day responsibilities a lot for one person to carry.

That’s why we’ve compiled this guide to help you discover available discounts and benefits for seniors in Singapore, covering several aspects of daily life including groceries and transport.

You may have seen charts like this in supermarkets that offer discounts to help seniors save on groceries when shopping on specific days. But there are a few different supermarket chains around Singapore, so how do you tell which ones offer the best value? We’ve explored discounts offered by three major supermarket chains - NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, and Giant - and compiled them here for your convenience.

1)    NTUC FairPrice & Unity Pharmacy

NTUC FairPrice senior discounts apply to both its groceries and healthcare essentials sold at Unity Pharmacies. It has the most extensive tier list, including specific discounts for Pioneer and Merdeka Generation cardholders.

●    Pioneer Generation (Mondays & Wednesdays) get 3% off
●    Merdeka Generation (Wednesdays) get 3% off
●    Singapore Citizen and PR seniors aged 60+ (Tuesdays) get 2% off.

The discount applies to a maximum spend of $200 per customer, per day. Your loved one must present their card at the checkout to receive the discount.

Forgot to bring the card? You can help your loved one verify their identity via MyInfo inside the FairPrice Group (FPG) App, which will automatically update whether they are eligible for senior, Pioneer Generation, or Merdeka Generation discounts. The discounts are automatically applied when you pay via the app at self-checkout machines.
 

2)    Giant and Sheng Siong

If you want a straightforward senior (60+) discount without needing a specific Pioneer/Merdeka Generation status, go to Giant and Sheng Siong on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

●    Giant Senior Discount (Tuesdays): Offers a flat 4% off for all Singapore Citizen and PR seniors aged 60+. There is no minimum spend required.
●    Sheng Siong Senior Discount (Tuesdays & Wednesdays): Offers a flat 4% off for all seniors aged 60+. Like FairPrice, this is capped at $200 per receipt per day.

Things to note before going down to the supermarket

●    Bring your loved one along: Unless you have applied for the SDC scheme (more on this in a later section), you cannot take your loved one’s NRIC or PAssion Silver card to the store and claim the discount on your own. To claim the discount, the eligible senior must be physically present at the checkout counter for verification.
●    These discounts do not apply to the entire store: These items are usually excluded across almost all supermarkets: infant formula milk powder, alcohol & tobacco products, legal gambling products, and supermarket gift cards. 
●    Not valid for online purchases: Standard senior weekday discounts are strictly valid for in-store physical purchases only and cannot be used for online ordering. However, CHAS card discounts can still be applied to online orders.

Tips for caregivers to maximise supermarket benefits
 

Tip #1: Stack supermarket discounts with loyalty points

In addition to existing supermarket discounts, you can enjoy further discounts using loyalty apps such as yuu Rewards and LinkPoints (FairPrice and Unity).
●    yuu Rewards: Available at Giant, Cold Storage, and Guardian. Link your loved one’s PAssion Card to the yuu app to earn points ($1 = 1 point), which can be used to offset future purchases at all yuu partner brands, which include 7-Eleven and BreadTalk.
●    LinkPoints: Use the FairPrice app and scan it at checkout to earn LinkPoints. You can use these LinkPoints to offset future purchases at NTUC FairPrice and Unity Pharmacy outlets.

Do you still have CDC Supermarket Vouchers? Stack them with these discounts and loyalty points at the checkout counter to maximise your savings.

Tip #2: Choose house brands

Each of the major supermarket chains has house brands that offer the same functional quality at competitive prices. For items where differences in taste may not be as important, such as rice, salt, tissue, and cleaning supplies, consider switching to house brands to save more. NTUC FairPrice states that its house-brand products are around 10-15% lower in price than comparable private-label products.

 
A quick search for antibacterial wipes on the NTUC FairPrice website (above) shows that house-brand products tend to be cheaper than private-label brands.
 

Tip #3: Use the NTUC FairPrice Seniors Discount Card (SDC) Scheme for Immobile Seniors

Supermarkets enforce the rule that the senior must be physically present to get a senior discount. But what if your loved one is unable to leave the house?

You can apply online via the FairPrice Help Center for the official Seniors Discount Card (SDC). This specific proxy card formally authorises one appointed family caregiver to purchase groceries and essentials at FairPrice/Unity on behalf of an immobile senior and still claim their Pioneer/Merdeka or Senior discounts on the respective discount days.

That means you can simply bring this card and your loved one’s PAssion Silver Card/CHAS card to the supermarket to receive senior discounts.

Tip #4: Schedule your grocery trips on Tuesdays

Tuesdays are when all three large supermarket chains offer discounts for seniors, regardless of whether they’re from the Pioneer or Merdeka Generation or not. 

Schedule your largest grocery run on this day, so you can shuttle between supermarkets to pick up different items, all while enjoying the same senior discounts throughout.
 

Transport

Have you noticed that some traffic light poles have a reader above the push button for extra crossing time? This is for seniors to tap their concession cards, and it’s one of several features in elderly-friendly neighbourhoods around Singapore.

Seniors who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents aged 60 and above enjoy public transport fare discounts on all our buses and MRTs with the PAssion Silver Concession Card (this completely replaced the older purple Senior Citizen Concession Cards back in 2016). 

When your loved one turns 60, they’ll receive an invitation pack for this card in the mail. After submitting their photo online, the card will be mailed to them. It works like an EZ-Link card, and your loved one can use it to enjoy several transport benefits, including:

●    Up to 55% off standard adult fares on public transport.
●    Access to the Hybrid Monthly Concession Pass for frequent travellers, where they can take unlimited rides on bus and train services for just $55 a month.

What if your loved one still uses the purple senior citizen concession card? Not to worry, as they won’t be exempt from enjoying senior concessions. Senior permanent residents can still continue to use the purple senior citizen concession card. For Singapore Citizens using the purple concession card, the new PAssion Silver Concession Card would have been automatically mailed to them.

Tip #1: Ensure your loved one pays with only one card on public transport

If your loved one has two cards - Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Concession Card and PAssion Silver Concession Card - make sure they only tap in and out of public transport with one card, as concessions cannot be stacked.
 

Tip #2: Manage different EZ-Link cards via your personal SimplyGo account

For convenience, you can also link this card to your SimplyGo app, allowing you to top it up remotely for them without visiting an MRT station. Follow these instructions to manage your loved one’s card from your app.

Tip #3: Tap for extra time to cross the road

As we mentioned earlier, you can also guide your loved one to tap their card on the "Green Man+" reader at traffic poles to get up to 13 seconds of extra crossing time. It’s especially helpful for seniors using walking frames or caregivers pushing wheelchairs to cross wide roads safely without rushing.

If you need to consider wheelchair transport for your loved one when travelling longer distances (such as to the hospital), you can consider these options:

1)    Wheelchair-friendly taxi options via ride-hailing apps

You can book a wheelchair-friendly cab via ride-hailing apps.
●    GrabAssist via Grab App: For passengers who can be transferred to a seat. The driver is trained to help you transfer your loved one and stow their foldable wheelchair or walker. Read more about the fares here.
●    GrabAssist Plus via Grab App: For passengers who must remain in their wheelchairs for the whole trip. This service uses specialised vehicles and provides ramps for easy boarding, with assistance from trained drivers. Read more about the fares here.
●    ComfortDelgro via CDG Zig App: Select a Large Taxi or Maxi Cab to access a wheelchair-accessible taxi (WAT) equipped with ramps. Read more about the MaxiCab Wheelchair Service fare rate here.

2)    Subsidised Medical Escort & Transport (MET) Scheme

If eligible, you may consider subsidised medical escort services for the elderly in Singapore. 
This is a government-subsidised service under the Ministry of Health (MOH), designed for seniors who need transport to medical appointments and require an escort for safety. 

It’s suitable if you’re unable to help your loved one get around due to your own health or physical conditions.

●    How it works: Seniors are picked up in a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and accompanied by a trained escort from their doorstep, through their hospital appointment, and back home.
●    Subsidies: Subsidies are means-tested (based on household per capita income). The cost of each round trip starts from $40 before any government subsidies. To qualify, your loved one must be a Singapore Citizen or PR. Make sure to update your household income status for means testing via the Medishield Life Household Check e-Service. You can also calculate your total caregiving expenses using the NHG Carepal App.
●    Providers: Operated by community care partners around Singapore.
●    How to apply: Speak to your doctor at the hospital or polyclinic, or contact a social worker who can help you submit the request to the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC).

3)    Specialised Charity Transport Services

Several non-profit organisations operate their own fleets of wheelchair-accessible vans at subsidised rates for those in need.

●    HWA Transport Services: Dial-A-Ride deploys minibuses to transport wheelchair users. It costs $49.00 for a one-way trip. Explore their services here.
●    The Red Cross TransportAid programme: Provides free or heavily subsidised transport and escorts for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities to attend their regular medical treatments. Most beneficiaries are referred by Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) under the Medical Escort and Transportation (MET) Service. Explore their services here.

●    Do senior citizens get a discount on trains?
Yes, senior citizens get discounts on all public transport with their PAssion Silver Concession Card. Find out how to apply for the card here.

●    Can the EZ-Link app top up a senior discount card?
The standalone EZ-Link app has been officially discontinued and integrated into the SimplyGo App. You can top up your loved one’s senior concession card via the SimplyGo app with these steps.

●    Can I get a senior citizen discount from FairPrice online?
NTUC FairPrice senior citizen discounts do not apply to online purchases. You must present the card in person at the checkout counter and bring your senior loved one along.

●    Does Guardian give senior discounts?
Guardian has a senior discount programme, the Golden Senior Card, which is available to customers aged 50+. Members enjoy a 5% discount on all regular-priced purchases and a 10% discount during their birthday month. Find the steps to apply here.
