Senior Citizen Discounts and Benefits in Singapore: Healthcare

Choosing to care for a family member is an incredibly meaningful journey, but it is also a demanding role that can reshape your daily life and long-term plans. Balancing finances, managing logistics, and preserving your own emotional energy make the day-to-day responsibilities a lot for one person to carry.

That’s why we’ve compiled this guide to help you discover available discounts and benefits for seniors in Singapore, covering several aspects of daily life such as healthcare.

Healthcare 

We previously mentioned the Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation discounts at supermarkets. Benefits for these two generations of seniors extend to healthcare too.

The Pioneer Generation (PG) and Merdeka Generation (MG) Packages are lifelong support packages provided based on birth year to eligible seniors. They provide substantial support in addition to standard citizens' healthcare subsidies.

1)    Outpatient and Medication Subsidies

These are the benefits for seniors at polyclinics and public specialist outpatient clinics (SOCs):

●    Pioneer Generation: Get an additional 50% off their remaining bills for subsidised services and medications.
●    Merdeka Generation: Get an additional 25% off their remaining bills for subsidised services and medications.

When enrolled under Healthier SG, both Pioneer and Merdeka Generation seniors can receive up to 87.5% subsidies on selected chronic disease medications at their designated primary care GP clinics. Homebound seniors receiving treatment for conditions covered under the Chronic Disease Management Programme can also use Medisave 500/700 to pay for medical care, including consultation fees and blood tests, done at home. 

Under Flexi-Medisave, patients aged 60+ can also use an additional $300 yearly.

2)    Vaccination Support

Seniors in both generation groups get fully subsidised (free) or heavily subsidised prices for nationally recommended vaccinations under the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), including pneumococcal and influenza vaccines, when visiting CHAS GP clinics or their enrolled Healthier SG clinic. 

You can ask your family doctor about your loved one’s eligibility for these vaccinations, or check their recommended vaccinations by logging in at vaccine.gov.sg with their Singpass.

3)    MediSave Top-ups & Insurance Subsidies 

Seniors in both generation groups receive premium subsidies for Medishield Life. These help to ease the increased cost of premiums as they get older.

●    Pioneer Generation: Receive between $300 and $1,200 in automatic MediSave top-ups every single year for life, depending on their birth cohort and pre-existing conditions. Additionally, they receive special subsidies of 40% to 60% on their MediShield Life premiums, regardless of their household monthly income or the Annual Value (AV) of their home.
●    Merdeka Generation: Receive an additional 5% to 10% premium subsidy for MediShield Life for life, regardless of their household monthly income or the Annual Value (AV) of their home.

Things to note:

●    Remember to update your household income status
While Pioneer and Merdeka packages are locked strictly to a senior’s birth year, regular CHAS tiers (Green, Orange, Blue) are evaluated based on Household Monthly Income Per Person (Per Capita Income). 
 

If your parent has no formal income but lives with you, the total household income is divided by all members living in that household.

Make sure to update your household status on the CHAS Changes in Household’s Financial Situation portal. If you are eligible, shifting CHAS tiers can help increase your loved one’s chronic care subsidy caps.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

●    Can PR get senior health benefits?
Yes, permanent residents are eligible for subsidised healthcare at public restructured hospitals and polyclinics. PRs are covered by MediShield Life, Medisave, and CareShield.
